CHALLENGE powers Wyman in an astounding weekend of racing

Helen Wyman showed remarkable form Sunday at Superprestige Gieten, where she took the win from the ever-dominant world champion, back for her cyclocross debut.

Marianne Vos started strong on the muddy course in the Netherlands, taking advantage of fresh legs and putting space between herself and the rest of the field, most of whom had raced the previous day.

Wyman bridged up to the Dutch world champion, with Sanne van Paassen and Sanne Cant chasing.

Until the penultimate lap, the two were unable to shake each other, despite frequent attacks. Finally, Wyman saw her chance and pushed the pace, with the world champion unable to hold the pace.

“It was my turn to hit the front, and I just tried to focus on my own event,” said Wyman.

“There aren’t many people that can say they beat Marianne, and I’d guess it been a lot of years since I have beaten her. So I’m pretty proud of that as I know she doesn’t race unless she is ready.”

The previous day, Wyman finished fifth at the Koksijde World Cup in Belgium. The Koksijde course features continuous sand dunes that the European champion admits is not her best course, yet rode consistently enough for a three-way tie for second in the World Cup.

“Roubaix is next up, so fingers crossed for more of the same, and a sprinkle of mud, and I can draw a line under this part of the season and be very happy,” said Wyman.

      Quoted in the media:

"It's her first race back and a tough one so I kept trying"

"Asked how it felt to win a race against Vos, Wyman replied with a huge grin, 'It’s brilliant.'"

"I thought, keep going, keep going and see what happens"
