Reigning US junior cyclocross champion Logan Owen claimed the top podium spot for Redline and Challenge Tires in the junior 17-18 field at Saturday's first day of the USGP of Cyclocross Derby City Cup in Louisville, KY.

The 17-year-old fought a tough battle after hitting the deck dramatically at the start of the first lap.

Owen was snappy out of the gate and took the wholeshot into the dirt, but flipped over his bars on a bump early in the race.

“By the time I crashed I had already put time into people,” said Owen after the race, “and I was just going to go as hard as I could through the sand pit and past the sand pit and see what happened after that.”

Although he wasn't able to execute his plan, the former BMX rider made his way back up through the field, eventually catching the leader, Curtis White (Hot Tubes Development Cycling Team). “You've got to adapt to changes and things that come up,” Owen said.

Once caught, White made a couple fatal errors that allowed Owen to ride away with the win, 51 seconds ahead of White. White's teammate Nathaniel Morse took the third podium slot, 1:46 back.

Owen still had scabs from his crash at the Plzen World Cup, where he came in third after Mathiew Van Der Poel of the Netherlands and Belgian Quinten Hermans.

“Tomorrow I'm gonna do the same thing, except for the crash,” said Owen. If he succeeds, it should be enough to take the win.
