Jade Wilcosxon (Optum Pro Cycling), last week’s Elite women’s Cross Crusade winner, proved herself against a national field Saturday with a seventh place finish behind fellow roadie teammate Carmen Small, who was racing her first-ever ‘cross event. Eight-time national champion Katie Compton stormed to another impressive win at the very tip of the race, with Luna’s Georgia Gould and Teal Steson-Lee rounding out the prodium.

Wilcoxson’s and Small’s performance certainly turned some heads in the cyclocross circles. Small, who was on the long team for the Olympics and was also a member of the US worlds team for the road race, and Wilcoxson, a neo-pro from Talent who made an impressive debut in her first season on the women’s national circuit this year, finished ahead of Kaitlin Antonneau (Exergy-Twenty12) and Nicole Duke (Raleigh-Clement), who were second and third at last January’s national championships. The pair also claimed strong French rider Caroline Mani (Raleigh-Clement) as a victim of their off-season adventure.

While Wilcoxosn made a strong debut as a newcomer on the national scene, the rest of the top four at last weekend’s Cross crusade opener also fared well in Fort Collins. Alice Pennington (Kona) finished inside the top 20 in 16th place, while Beth Ann Orton (Team S&M Les Femmes) and Cross crusade runner-up Serena Bishop Gordon (Silverado Gallery-Sunnyside Sports) were 22nd and 23rd, respectively.
