    • GP Gloucester Wins for Helen Wyman!

GP Gloucester is kind of big deal on the East Coast of the USA.  Billing itself as the New England World Championships and carried on in a spectacular bay location, Helen was determined to defend both the C1 and C2 titles she took in 2011.

The weather forecast was bad, and it certainly lived up to it with 20 hours rain before Saturdays racing began. Despite most of the North East cyclo-cross regulars saying there would be no mud due to great drainage, you could see the course cutting up during the big fields of the masters events.  But with the rain stopping and the sun coming out followed by a steady wind, the course was pretty quick for the womens race.

Helen got a bad start but managed to climb back through the field over the first half a lap before taking the lead as the riders past the first pit.  With the corners and slick cambers being the only place to make a difference on the otherwise fast course, the gaps were always close.  Helen stretched the lead to 20 seconds, but after a small mechanical for Gabby Day things were going to change shape. Seemingly fuelled by adrenaline, Gabby charged back through the field in pursuit of Helen.  Gabby got to within 6 seconds but it Helen held her off to take an important first C1 victory of the season.

With further heavy overnight rain, the course changed a lot and was muddy all the way around.  Day 2 also sees the inclusion of the famous beach crossing along with a few other subtle course changes.  With these conditions being perfect for Helen, she took the hole-shot and looked to move away from the field. Nicole Duke briefly battle with Helen but Helen was able to power away and take 30 seconds a lap on the other riders in the 3 lap race.  Gabby Day, after a slow start sliced her way through the chasing pack to finished 2nd again, while Duke held on for 3rd.

“I love these kinds of condition and I felt great today. My legs were fresh and I was really motivated to put in a good performance after being run so close yesterday.  I had to miss the Midnight Ride cross in the week as I was a little under the weather, and I hope yesterday was the last of that” commented Helen after Sundays race.

“This is a cool course. The spectator numbers are up there with Charm City which makes it a great venue to race at.  Gabby has once again proved she’s up there and ready to take anyone on and it was great to battle hard with Nicole as I had a great race with her here last year”

“But everything is going well and I’m pretty sad I only have one more week here in the USA.  I leave after Providence, but I’m looking at the potential of coming back mid season for another block of events and we’ll see how that pans out over the coming days.”
