      Stage 2: Utrecht – Zélande 166 Km

Great reaction for Team Bretagne Séché Environnement after the not exciting result at the prologue. Armindo Fonseca (in the picture below) was the first attacker of the Tour de France at Kilometer 0.

He was in a breakaway with other three riders. They got a maximum advantage of 2’45” at km 28 while Etixx-Quick Step took control of the chase. After the intermediate sprint in Rotterdam, Armindo accelerated again and continued to stay in the breakaway with two of the three riders until the group reached them.

Varied weather conditions followed the race: high temperature and sun at the departure, then rain and wind that covered all the riders in sand. The main group was split in three parts due to falls at a roundabout and strong cross winds made it difficult for the back groups to re-connect.

André Greipel won the stage at an average speed of 47,664 Km/h. Florian Vachon is the first BSE rider crossing the finish line in the second group 1’28” behind.

Unfortunately the team leader Eduardo Sepulveda reached the finish line with 5’4” behind having been involved in a fall after choosing the wrong way around a roundabout.

Today’s 3rd stage (Monday, July 6th) is from Antwerp to Huy in Belgium: 166 km that will finish at the “mur de Huy” where the Flèche Wallonne ends. The final wall is 1.300 meters long with an average rise of 9,6% and some ramps of 19% where the first “polka dot” jersey will be awarded.
