• 2014/06/13 Optum Pro Cycling p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies Capture Stage Win, Yellow Jersey and Multiple Podiums
    • The Stage 3 Cannon Falls Road Race covered 94 miles yesterday for both the men and women at the North Star Grand Prix over a large circuit with varying terrain and plenty of wind. After an early gravel section wreaked havoc on the field, the race was neutralized and restarted for the men. The Orange & Black quickly set about putting the rest of the field into distress through a windy and hilly section about mid-way through the stage. 5 of our riders made a split of 12 that rode away from the shattered peloton. Emerging from the fields onto the closing circuits in town, Optum p/b KBS still had all of their riders in the move and began attacking. Ryan Anderson joined 3 other riders on the final lap and managed to take the win, while the rest of the guys traded blows against the other breakaway riders. With the gap at the finish as well as the time bonus, Anderson jumped over his teammate in the overall to take the lead. Jesse Anthony and Tom Zirbel are in 4th and 5th going into tonight's Uptown Criterium.

Women Claim Podium After Longest Stage
The women's team played an aggressive role in their 3rd stage as well, as they looked to shake up the general classification. Midway through the race, Annie Ewart leapt from the peloton with 3 other riders and the gap rose to a minute and held for a number of miles. It was eventually brought back just as the remnants of the field entered the final circuits in Cannon Falls. Lauren Hall responded immediately causing a big reaction from the peloton and a counterattack by teammate Janel Holcomb. Holcomb held a small gap on the final lap but was also reabsorbed leaving sprinter Leah Kirchmann one more opportunity to take the stage. Kirchmann punched out from the field at 400m to go looking to take advantage of the downhill section prior to the uphill drag to the line. She was overtaken but still managed 3rd on the day and currently holds 3rd on the General Classification. Last year's runner up Jade Wilcoxson sits in 5th.

Jones Climbs Beauce's Mont Megantic To 3rd Place

The men are on double duty this week with a 6-man roster competing in Quebec's UCI 2.2 ranked Tour de Beauce. Following the inaugural 2.2 GP Saguenay last week, where Eric Young captured 2 stage wins and held the overall lead for 3 days, the team imported their top climber and Tour of the Gila overall winner Carter Jones for additional climbing support in the ever-grueling Tour de Beauce. Young just missed out on the win and another yellow jersey on the opening stage, capturing 2nd on day 1. But the race is always defined by the climbers and Mont Megantic - one of the most difficult summit finishes in North America. 1 rider managed to elude the chasing peloton to capture the victory while Jones climbed to 3rd on the stage and moved into 3rd overall. The remaining stages include continuous rolling terrain terrain over difficult circuits in Quebec City and St. Georges.
