• 2013/10/30 Selecting 'cross tires for the conditions and preventing flats
    • White, malt or balsamic?

Once again, 'tis the season for lots of debris on the roads, which often means frequent punctures and cuts. The softer natural rubber on handmade tires can pick up debris more easily than harder synthetic rubber, but we've got a pro tip to help prevent picking up puncture-causing debris when riding handmade tires: vinegar. Find out why here.

      What do the pros use?

During the 10 years that Challenge has been manufacturing handmade tubulars and open tubulars for disciplines on the road and the dirt, many world champions and riders at the top of the World Cup have contributed their insight to develop the rounded line of competition tires we at Challenge boast today.

Our current work with Helen and Stefan Wyman in cyclocross has provided new knowledge to help us refine and develop the current cyclocross line. Stefan detailed his and Helen's process in choosing a Challenge tread for each race that may provide a thorough framework for distributors, retailers, media and individual racers to reference when picking through the line.

Click here to check out “The Wyman Method” for selecting cyclocross treads. It should not be confused for a comprehensive look at how all Challenge users select treads, but is a complete guide and detailed insight into how the second-ranked woman in the world and her mechanic make the selection for any condition and course, and thought you would find it interesting. For some perspective on how different individual preferences can be, see notes on tire selection based on conditions from some other Challenge athletes. Note that most Challenge athletes have only recently begun riding the new tread, Chicane.

Note: The Chicane is intended to be installed with the long arm of the Y pointing forward
